A Clear Record of Your Bird Watching Experiences

As time passes, memories fade. However, when having a bird watching journal, the bird watcher can simply look back at their records to see what species of birds were seen. It will be a clear record of all of their watching experiences. It may even be that a bird watching journal contains a record of a very rare sighting.

What To Record In The Bird Watching Journal

It is important that all bird watching journal records are accurate and complete, as these will assist the person in knowing specifics of their experience and also validate the records for others. Bird watching journals should contain the general and specific location of the sightings, the time and date, weather conditions, species of birds, the sex of the bird, and specific markings on the bird. Photographs can also be included in the journal for an added great feature.

Bird watching is increasingly becoming one of the most popular hobbies all around the world. Many people regard bird watching as a boring, tedious hobby, but, to bird watching enthusiasts around the world, there is nothing better than spending a day or a weekend spotting and identifying these wonderful creatures; a fun way to get an eco-education!

A bird watching journal is as an important piece of bird watching gear as a pair of binoculars or a camera. While bird watching, the bird watcher not only has to spot the birds and identify them, but he or she also needs to keep a record of all the species that he or she has seen. This is why a good bird watching journal is a vital piece of a bird watcher’s ‘arsenal’.

Bird Watching Journal Features

Bird watching journals contain blank pages on which you can write notes, descriptions, and any other pertinent information that you wish to keep a record of when bird watching. A good bird watching journal is compact and light, and can be stored easily when on a bird watching adventure. It should not be too big as this would make the use of the journal quite awkward. It is also a good idea to purchase a bird watching journal with a cover or a case to protect it from any hazards, such as water damage, that can be experienced whilst pursuing this enjoyable hobby.

When keeping record of your bird watching excursions, aside from compiling a list of all the birds that you have spotted, be sure to take note of the geographical location and weather conditions of the area in which you spotted a particular bird. To add to the fun, also make notes detailing the bird watching party, the hotels or campsites where you stayed, who you met during the excursion, and anything else that you wish to remember.

Where To Get A Bird Watching Journal

You can purchase an excellent, compact, easy-to-use bird watching journal at any good hobby or book store anywhere in the world. You can even find them available for purchase on a variety or bird watching websites. Search for the bird watching journal that best meets your personal needs and wants. It is always a good idea to buy one that is already covered or cased in protective material.

Whether you buy one for yourself or for a friend or loved one, a bird watching journal will never go to waste – it can be used for years to come!

Birdwatchers are keen to view as many species as possible, and sometimes this figure reaches a total of several hundred different birds. Some birdwatchers never leave the comfort of their own surroundings whilst other will travel the world in order to log in their records, the sightings of rare and unusual birds. The information recorded will include the date and time of the sighting, where the birds were spotted and just what may have enticed the bird to the area where the sighting took place.

The log starts as a single sheet of paper, placed in a folder and added to at regular intervals or maybe a notebook which will hold all the information the birdwatcher has collected over the years. In addition to the basic information the individual can choose whether or not to keep various other records as well. Some birdwatchers will log personal observations to remind them of a specific sighting. The log as a whole will provide information about how to attract particular birds and which birds will be found in a specific area.

Sophisticated Bird Watching Logs Of Detailed Information

For the more computer literate birdwatchers there are now software programs available to enable them to keep all their information and records on their computers. These software applications are useful wherever you are in the world, and will show detailed information about many different places where people regularly go to get sightings of the birds. Whether a stay at home birdwatcher or a person who goes off globe-trotting to spot the birds, this software proves to be very useful as an information source.

The computer bird watching logs allow room for pages and pages of notes on the activities of the birdwatcher, with illustrations and images of the sighted birds. The pictures can be stored in gallery form for ease of viewing and other like-minded birdwatchers can send and receive information and photographs of the birds they have seen. This is a great way of sharing their much loved hobby.

It is always a good idea to keep a bird watching record sheet if you are a keen bird watcher. This is merely a list upon which you can record the different species of birds that you have viewed. Usually, this will be recorded in a journal with each entry containing at least the date, location and species of the bird, as well as any other notes you may wish to make.

Some people find that just one bird watching record sheet is not enough for them. This will depend on how often and how serious you are about bird watching. Whether you keep one bird watching record sheet or several, it can be very satisfying to be able to look back and remember previous bird watching experiences.

If you plan to use more than one bird watching record sheet, you might be wondering how best to split them up. There are five different types of lists which may prove useful. First of all, you can keep a house list which will contain records of birds which you have viewed around your home. Secondly, you can keep a yearly list, which is simply a separate list for each year that you have been bird watching. Third, you could keep a state list, with birds from different states, if you find yourself bird watching in different parts of the country. Fourth, you can keep a trip list for each bird watching trip that you go on. The last type of list you may want to keep is a wish list, containing entries for birds which you have not yet seen, but hope to. You can simply cross these birds of the list one you have seen them.

Keeping Your Bird Watching Record Sheet On Your Computer

If you want to keep a bird watching record sheet on you computer, there are a few programs which are available. Most of these come in some format where you can enter in your information, and have a record sheet generated for you.

The major drawback to using computer programs is the fact that you need a computer or laptop in order to use them. This can be a bit difficult when you are out on a bird watching adventure. For this reason, most bird watchers will view a computer generated bird watching record sheet as a supplement to a physical list.
